The singer said he was too 'thick skinned' to let it bother him

He has won countless awards and received critical acclaim for his debut album, In The Lonely Hour, in which he opens up about his failed relationships and struggles with his sexuality.

But now Sam Smith has shared a screengrab of a social media account set up to post abusive comments about him in order to draw attention to the prevalence of homophobia.

Smith tweeted a link to an account named ‘Gay Sam Smith’ which included numerous gay slurs, but the singer said he wasn’t going to let it bother him.

"This genuinely doesn’t offend me, coz I’m way too tick (sic) skinned when it comes to this kind of shit. BUT I just wanted to share this with everyone, so you can see how homophobic is still SO PRESENT in our society!!"

Smith was praised for standing up to ignorant people and remaining calm in the face of homophobia.

The singer has frequently talked about the homophobic bullying he received as a child, and has discussed his struggle with accepting his weight.
