Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner says the numerous sex scenes contained within the HBO series led her to tell her parents that she didn't need a sex education talk.

Turner joined the GoT cast when she was aged just 14 for the role of Sansa Stark, alongside Maisie Williams, now 17, and Isaac Hempstead Wright, now 16.

The 19-year-old told Stellar magazine that processing such a sexually explicit script was a strange experience for all three of them ahead of filming for the first series.

“When I first read through the full script I was with [her on-screen siblings] Maisie, who is a year younger than me, and Isaac, who is three years younger, and we were sitting there, reading, looking up at our parents – like, what is this?”

Turner, who has appeared in all four series of the popular show, said she stopped her mother in her tracks when she attempted to have a conversation with her about sex when she was 16.

"I said, 'This isn't necessary, I know everything. I know every single thing that a person can do - and more'. The show is very inventive."

She admitted her parents were initially shocked by the script but later came to terms with its content. "There were so many sex scenes in the first series,” she explained, “but after that they got used to it. They knew it was a good quality show."

Turner also expressed a passion for politics during the wide-ranging interview, revealing her support for the Green Party. "I care about who runs the country," she said. "My family have always voted Labour, but I think I’m more Green Party. My childhood was so country-based, I want to protect that."

Her on-screen sister Williams recently took on the politicians hoping the younger generation is too busy taking selfies to pay attention to what is really going on in an interview with Dazed magazine.

The actress also took aim at adults who undermine her because of her age, saying: I get a lot of adults who are like, ‘You don’t know s**t,’ and it’s like, ‘You don’t know s**t. You have no idea what it’s like to be 17 years old.’”

The fifth season of GoT is now being aired on Sky Atlantic.
