Gwar frontman Dave Brockie died of an accidental heroin overdose, it has been confirmed.

The metal musician, known by his stage name Oderus Urungus, was found dead at his home in March. He was 50 years old.

According to the Virginia State Medical Examiner's Office, Brockie died from “acute heroin toxicity”.

Police added that no foul play had been suspected.

Ex-Gwar bassist Mike Bishop paid tribute to Brockie in March, telling Richmond publication Style Weekly: “Dave was one of the funniest, smartest, most creative and energetic persons I've known.

“He was brash sometimes, always crass, irreverent, he was hilarious in every way. But he was also deeply intelligent and interested in life, history, politics and art.”

Brockie founded the tongue-in-cheek band in 1984. Gwar released their 13th studio album, Battle Maximus, last year.

The group were set to play their fifth GWAR-B-Q at Hadad's Water Park in Richmond on 16 August.
