From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. With New Year’s Eve set to be a remote celebration this year, Mariah Carey has made sure that two lucky people can still celebrate in Times Square through a partnership with Airbnb.
According to the vacation rental website, Carey, who has performed at multiple New Year’s Eve celebrations ahead of New York City’s ball drop, will be offering the opportunity to rent a snowglobe-esque dome for just one night – for only $21.
The dome, which will be situated on the Nasdaq building’s terrace, will offer its guests panoramic city views, including most importantly, a view of the New Year’s Eve ball.
Inside the spacious dome is a bed and an armchair, while the guests will also be given the opportunity to take advantage of an indoor lounge space, where they can watch other NYE celebrations around the world, or play games in the reading nook.
According to the listing, the accommodations will also include a “fully-stocked dining area”, where guests will find some of Carey’s “favourite festive snacks, including Mariah’s Cookies”, while dinner prepared by a private chef will also be provided, along with a cheesecake from Junior’s.
Carey said she also plans to virtually greet the two individuals herself – and provide them with a $5,000 shopping credit to purchase the “NYE outfit of your dreams” from New York City’s Fifth Avenue.
To add to the festive environment, Carey, who describes herself as a “singer, songwriter, author, entrepreneur and holiday season enthusiast”, will also be providing a “trunk full of sparkly New Year’s Eve accessories, like hats, 2021 glasses and horns, for the countdown”.
“Let’s be real: no one’s ‘obsessed’ with 2020 – and the countdown to New Year’s can’t come sooner”, the listing, written in Carey’s voice, reads. “New Yorkers have found the strength to carry on this year, and the people of this city are my heroes. To honour NYC’s resilience, I’m inviting two locals from the same household to call Times Square home for one night and sleep in a cozy dome atop Nasdaq’s terrace. Under the New Year’s Eve ball, say GTFO to 2020 in style.
“With most of the world tuning into a livestream of the Times Square New Year’s Eve festivities this year, all I want is for you to be among the #beautiful few there IRL, dancing in the confetti showers right below the ball.”
The chance to book the once-in-a-lifetime Airbnb opens at 9am ET on 21 December, with the guests, who must be from the same household and New York City residents in accordance with Covid-19 precautions, chosen on a first-come, first-served basis.
Both guests must also provide a negative Covid-19 test taken with 72 hours of the stay.
As part of the collaboration, and to honour New York City’s frontline workers, who “have given everything to protect New Yorkers during the Covid-19 crisis”, Airbnb said it will be making a contribution to an organisation serving New York City frontline workers and their families.
