The “All I Want for Christmas is You” singer appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Monday (7 December) where she discussed all things festive.
Fallon congratulated Carey for the song’s everlasting popularity – after topping the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2019 for the first time – before asking the singer what other songs were on her Christmas playlist.
“So many. Every year it's a constant. No-one that’s with me at Christmas is allowed to listen to anything but Christmas music until after New Year,” Carey replied. “It’s just a non-starter, you can’t do it.”
As a top three, she offered up Donny Hathaway’s “This Christmas”, Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song” and Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas”.
“I like all the classics. There’s so many good ones… even the Elf soundtrack is great,” she continued. “I can’t give away all my things, but you know what else people should listen to is the Jackson 5 Christmas album.”
On Friday (4 December), Carey released her musical TV extravaganza, Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special, on Apple TV+, with the special marking the debut of a remix of her 2010 single “Oh Santa!” featuring Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson.
However, it is “All I Want For Christmas Is You” that has continued to dominate the charts in 2020, with the song on course to get its first ever UK No 1, 26 years after it was first released.
In previous years the 1994 hit had peaked at No 6 in the Official Charts Company’s UK Top 40, but it is currently in the No 2 spot, just beneath Grande’s “Positions” in first place.
Wham!’s “Last Christmas” has also risen up the ranks, where it is currently in the No 3 spot.
