On Sunday evening, Lopez and Shakira put on a show-stopping spectacle for the Super Bowl halftime show, performing a medley of songs including “Whenever, Wherever”, “Jenny from the Block” and “Let’s Get Loud”.
They wore an array of outfits for the performance, bringing the show to a close in similarly dazzling silver and gold ensembles.
Lopez’s make-up added a dramatic touch to her overall look, combining a sultry, smoky eye with a nude lip.
The beauty look was created by make-up artist Scott Barnes, whose preparations for the day began at 10am.
“My vibe for this was Versace supermodel, the ‘90s,” Barnes told Elle.
The make-up artist explained that he took inspiration from Nineties photo shoots by the late Peter Lindbergh, which featured supermodels including Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington.
“I was like, ‘OMG, this reminds me of Linda, it could be Christy, and all of the girls’,” he said. “I wanted to give the nod to that, and that’s where the make-up inspiration came from.”
Barnes said that he began prepping for Lopez’s make-up at 10am, arriving at her home half an hour later.
“She was doing some rehearsing, we were doing fittings, and then nails started, and hair, and then make-up,” he explained.
“But I didn’t finish it yet, so I left the house around 3pm with a police escort. Yeah, a police escort.”
Barnes resumed doing Lopez’s make-up at 4.30pm, continuing until 5.30pm, just a few hours before the show.
“We did a quick little run through, and then we finished up and we were on stage. It was crazy,” the celebrity make-up artist said.
The Californian described how, while standing on the side of the stage, he was continuously checking he had all the necessary cosmetic products on hand for Lopez, including powder, lip gloss and bronzer.
“At that point, I was using a ton of products, my palette, my new lip glosses that are coming out, Marc Jacobs bronzer and Marc Jacobs eyeliner to be exact,” he said.
“That’s what we did the smoky eye with and it was so great and amazing. It was so soft and worked so well.”
One thing that could have proved an issue for Lopez’s make-up was the lighting on stage, which Barnes noted was “very strong”.
However, the use of the Marc Jacobs eyeliner proved Barnes’ saving grace.
“I felt like the light was very strong up there. I was like, ‘I have to do this eye punchier or else it’s going to disappear,” he recalled.
“Thank God for that eyeliner because it literally saved my life.”
