From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

On Sunday night, Kate arrived at the Royal Albert Hall alongside Prince William wearing a gold-embroidered gown by Alexander McQueen.
The royal accessorised the dress with a glittering gold clutch bag designed by Anya Hindmarch, a pair of Jimmy Choo heels and a necklace and earrings from Van Cleef & Arpels.
Eagle-eyed fashion fans will recognise the dress, which the royal first wore in 2012 to attend a dinner with the King and Queen of Malaysia during a tour of Southeast Asia.
By choosing to wear a dress she already owned, Kate was adhering to Bafta’s new sustainable dress code which encouraged guests to either re-wear something they already own or hire an ensemble as opposed to buying something new.
A spokesperson for Bafta said: “Sustainability is very important to Bafta, and we’re doing more than ever before.
“Where sustainable choices are unable to be made, Bafta is offsetting, as well as giving guests the tools to offset their own travel and make sustainable fashion choices.”
Ahead of the event, the British award body created a sustainable fashion guide in collaboration with the London College of Fashion, which urged guests use rental fashion sites, source clothing from resale outlets and opt for sustainable fashion brands, such as Stella McCartney, which are renowned for using eco-friendly materials.
“This awards season BAFTA are doing more than ever before to consider sustainability across its awards ceremonies, including inviting guests to ‘dress sustainably’,” the guide read.
“To help navigate some of the issues around fashion and sustainability London College of Fashion, UAL are supporting BAFTA with more information on how you can dress sustainably.”
Last month, Joker star Joaquin Phoenix announced that he would be wearing the same suit to every awards show this year to help reduce waste.
The actor first attended the Golden Globe Awards wearing a custom-made tuxedo by Stella McCartney and has sported it for every ceremony since, including the SAG and Critics’ Choice Awards.
