Joaquin Phoenix has vowed to wear the same suit to every awards show this year to help reduce waste.

On Sunday, the Joker star attended the Golden Globe Awards wearing a custom-made tuxedo by Stella McCartney – a British designer who has been a leading voice in sustainable fashion since launching her brand in 2001, working with vegan animal skins and encouraging collaborators such as Adidas to create fabrics using recyclable materials.

Phoenix, who won a Golden Globe for his role in the comic book movie, chose to use his appearance at the ceremony to make a point about fashion’s role in climate change by not only opting for a sustainably conscious label but by getting multiple wears out of the same outfit.

On Monday, McCartney revealed that the actor plans to wear the same suit to every single Hollywood awards show this season.

“This man is a winner… wearing custom Stella because he chooses to make choices for the future of the planet and all of its creatures,” the designer wrote alongside a series of photos of Phoenix at the Golden Globes.

“He has also chosen to wear this same tux for the entire award season to reduce waste. I am proud and honoured to join forces with you Joaquin, keep inspiring and keep shining your light x Stella.”

During his acceptance speech Phoenix, who is a lifelong vegan and is often seen at climate crisis and PETA protests, spoke about a number of animal rights and environmental issues, including climate change, veganism and the Australian wildfires.

The actor kicked off his speech by thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for serving a vegan meal during the ceremony and “for recognising and acknowledging the link between animal agriculture and climate change.”

He then pleaded with his fellow actors to do what they can to limit their carbon footprints.

“It's great to vote, but sometimes we have to take that responsibility on ourselves and make changes and sacrifices in our own lives, and I hope that we can do that,” Phoenix said.

“We don't have to take private jets to Palm Springs for the awards sometimes or back. Please. And I'll try to do better and I hope you will too.”

This year, the Golden Globes became one of Hollywood’s most sustainable awards shows, featuring a reusable red carpet, paper drinking straws and a plant-based menu as a means of addressing the climate crisis during the star-studded event

Single-use plastics were banned, while water was poured from glass bottles and food was sourced locally wherever possible.

“We are going vegan!” a statement published on the Golden Globes Facebook page said.

“At the 77th Golden Globes Awards ceremony, a 100 per cent plant-based dinner, including a chilled golden beet soup and king oyster mushrooms with risotto, will be served.

“The climate crisis is impossible to ignore and after speaking with our peers, and friends in the community, we felt challenged to do better.”
