At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Awards season kicked off on Sunday night with the Golden Globes at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, California.

This year’s ceremony, which marked the 77th consecutive year it has been held, was presented by British comedian Ricky Gervais and saw stars come together to celebrate the film industry’s most acclaimed talents.

Every year, the Golden Globes is eagerly watched by cinephiles and fashion fans alike with celebrities in attendance making their first appearance of the night on the red carpet.

So who cemented their place in the annals of awards season fashion this time round?

The nominees for the Golden Globes – which you can see here – were announced in December 2019, giving an indication of who we might expect to see dominating the red carpet for 2020.

As always, the event was a glamorous affair, attracting fashionable figures including nominees such as Charlize Theron for Bombshell and Margot Robbie for Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood.

Making one of the biggest sartorial spectacles of the night, Jennifer Lopez arrived wearing a Valentino ballgown that featured an oversized gold and emerald green bow, while Billy Porter walked the red carpet in a custom white tuxedo jacket that featured a dramatic feather train.

Elsewhere, tailoring proved a popular trend among female guests with everyone from Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Ellen DeGeneres to Kate McKinnon ditching dresses in favour of trouser suits.

While the accolades tend to take centre stage at the Golden Globes, A-listers have been known to make bold sartorial statements on the red carpet in recent years.

In 2018, celebrities initiated an all-black dress code to raise awareness of the prevalence of sexual harassment and assault in Hollywood.

And, while colour made a full return in 2019, stars continued to show their allegiance to the campaign by wearing black and white bracelets and ribbons that read “Time’s Up x2” to mark its second year.

For 2020 however, activism was relatively absent from the red carpet. While celebrities did not confirm the reason behind the colour choice of their outfits, many people on social media speculated that the heavily monochromatic mood of the evening could be a reference to the Time’s Up movement.
