Follow the latest updates live from the Italian Grand Prix at Monza where Lewis Hamilton will attempt to make it six wins from eight this season as he starts from pole position.

The six-time world champion is bidding to match Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of seven titles, and a victory today will take him a giant step closer towards achieving that honour, with the Mercedes driver already holding a 47-point advantage in the standings. He is also just two race wins away from Schumacher’s tally of 91 career victories, and should he triumph today, he could end up equalling that record next weekend.

His Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas starts alongside him on the front row, but Hamilton’s nearest challenger in Max Verstappen will only start in fifth after the Red Bull qualified behind Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez, leaving the Dutchman with plenty of work to do if he is to secure a podium finish on the high-speed track. Follow the live updates below.

Lap 24

So Hamilton still leads ahead of Stroll, who hasn’t pitted, with Hasly, Leclerc and Raikkonen in the top five after pitting before the safety car…

Lap 23

With Magnussen’s car retrieved, the pits opens and here comes the field. McLaren double-stack Sainz and Norris and just get Norris out in front of Bottas, whose jumped in front of Ricciardo and Perez.

To make matters more confusing, the safety car is in this lap!

Lap 22

Lewis Hamilton is under investigation for pitting while the pits were closed, as is Giovinazzi, and this could be massive!

Lap 21

Hamilton pits from the lead, but Sainz and Norris stay out and Sainz takes the lead. Why?

It’s because the pit lane is closed, and has Hamilton just landed himself in hot water? Raikkonen also pits, but the FIA shut the pit lane as Magnussen’s car was in the firing line. This could be a penalty for the championship leader!

Lap 20

Magnussen has a problem and his Haas grinds to a halt on the exit of Parabolica, but although he’s near a marshal post, it may need a VSC to retrieve it. Gasly pits, hoping for a stroke of luck with a full safety car… and it comes!

Lap 17

Ferrari’s day goes from bad to worse as Albon manages to work his way past Leclerc for 13th. Immediately, Albon gaps him and Giovinazzi is right on the back of the Ferrari, and this could be about to get worse. It won’t as Leclerc pits at the end of the lap.

Lap 16

As the pit window opens for the field - with everyone looking like they’re on the one-stop apart from Magnussen in last - Verstappen has a first look at Bottas into Turn One. Bottas is trying to go off line at every opportunity to cool the car, and there is plenty of concern for Mercedes with their No 2 driver.

Here’s the incident between Albon and Grosjean that landed the Thai driver a five-second penalty.

Lap 12

So where are the big battles? Bottas is catching Ricciardo for fifth, but the problem is the Mercedes has been one of the slowest cars in a straight line all weekend, and he’s hitting the rev limiter when Ricciardo is still pulling away. That’s allowing Verstappen to catch Bottas behind, while in the battle for eighth, Stroll, Ocon, Gasly and Kvyat are separated by just three seconds.
