Follow the latest updates live from the Italian Grand Prix at Monza where Lewis Hamilton will attempt to make it six wins from eight this season as he starts from pole position.
The six-time world champion is bidding to match Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of seven titles, and a victory today will take him a giant step closer towards achieving that honour, with the Mercedes driver already holding a 47-point advantage in the standings. He is also just two race wins away from Schumacher’s tally of 91 career victories, and should he triumph today, he could end up equalling that record next weekend.
His Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas starts alongside him on the front row, but Hamilton’s nearest challenger in Max Verstappen will only start in fifth after the Red Bull qualified behind Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez, leaving the Dutchman with plenty of work to do if he is to secure a podium finish on the high-speed track. Follow the live updates below.
Lap 50 standings
1. Gasly
2. Sainz
3. Stroll
4. Norris
5. Bottas
6. Ricciardo
7. Ocon
8. Hamilton
9. Kvyat
10. Perez
Lap 49
Hamilton is up to ninth as he passes Perez into Turn One, and his next target is Kvyat 1.7s up the road.
Lap 48
Six laps to go, and the lead gap is down to 1.4s.
Lap 47
Hamilton has got past Latifi and Raikkonen and he’s back into the points, with Perez up next. Gasly meanwhile gets the clear to up the pace as he’s brought his tyre temperatures down.
Lap 46
Sainz has the gap down to 1.5s, and Gasly is under big pressure in the battle for race victory. Who thought we’d say that a few hours ago?
Lap 44
Ocon and Kvyat both pass Raikkonen and the Alfa Romeo is in danger of dropping out of the points completely, having restarted in second place. Hamilton has Latifi and Perez in between him and the points, but you’d expect Raikkonen to slip back into his clutches too.
Lap 43 standings
1. Gasly
2. Sainz +2.8s
3. Stroll +4.9s
4. Norris +9.3s
5. Bottas +10.s
6. Ricciardo +12.0s
7. Ocon +18.3s
8. Raikkonen +19.1s
9. Kvyat +19.2s
10. Perez +20.0s
Lap 42
Hamilton actually makes light work of Grosjean and Russell, and that puts him into a few seconds of clear air to get the temperatures back down and sharpen the pace.
Lap 40
Albon comes up with an error as he straight lines the first chicane, and that allows Hamilton to pass rather comfortably in the end to move up to 14th. Russell and Grosjean are fighting in front, and this won’t be easy for the championship leader. Sainz meanwhile has cut the lead to three seconds.
Lap 39
Hamilton’s progress has stopped immediately. The Mercedes simply cannot follow in traffic, and just like Bottas, he can’t catch Albon even with DRS.
