Follow the latest updates live from the Italian Grand Prix at Monza where Lewis Hamilton will attempt to make it six wins from eight this season as he starts from pole position.

The six-time world champion is bidding to match Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of seven titles, and a victory today will take him a giant step closer towards achieving that honour, with the Mercedes driver already holding a 47-point advantage in the standings. He is also just two race wins away from Schumacher’s tally of 91 career victories, and should he triumph today, he could end up equalling that record next weekend.

His Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas starts alongside him on the front row, but Hamilton’s nearest challenger in Max Verstappen will only start in fifth after the Red Bull qualified behind Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez, leaving the Dutchman with plenty of work to do if he is to secure a podium finish on the high-speed track. Follow the live updates below.

Lap 37

Bottas is up next and he divebombs Raikkonen into Turn One, taking fifth for the lead Mercedes. Hamilton has caught the pack meanwhile, and his first victim will be Albon.

Lap 36

Norris now gets by Raikkonen, and the Alfa Romeo looks like it’s stuck in reverse out there. Next up is Bottas, who hasn’t made any progress since the restart.

Lap 35

Stroll is the next to challenge Raikkonen, and the two go wheel to wheel into the Variante della Roggia chicane as Stroll shows excellent commitment to hang on around the outside and take third place from the Alfa Romeo.

Lap 34

Sainz is told to bide his time behind Raikkonen, but says he is worried about Gasly getting away and as a result he sends one down the outside of Kimi and makes it stick through Turn One and Two, moving the McLaren up to second. The race is on out in front, with Gasly 4.2s ahead.

Lap 33

A new fastest lap of the race for Lewis Hamilton, and he’s on the charge at the back of the field. Another fastest lap from Hamilton next time around, while in front Russell is in one hell of a scrap with Grosjean for 13th.

Lap 30

Giovinazzi stops for his penalty, and releases Sainz back into the top three. Verstappen also pits, and Red Bull are retiring the car! Max Verstappen is out of the race!

Lap 29

Hamilton is dead last and 29 seconds behind race-leader Gasly, and he’s got an incredible amount of work to do to even get back into the points. No further action against Norris for slowing down before pitting, while no further action against Verstappen and Perez for a first-corner collision.

Lap 27

Stroll gets a shocker of a start, and he’s jumped by Gasly, Raikkonen and Giovinazzi. Stroll then goes off at the second chicane, and he’s passed by Sainz to drop to sixth, though Stroll then gets back past on the run to Ascari. Sainz isn’t having it though and he fights back on the main straight to take fifth place as Hamilton pits to serve his penalty.

The Italian Grand Prix is back under way!

Lap 27

Here we go then. The safety car peels in and Hamilton leads the field to the grid. It’s a 26-lap shootout…
