From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Lewis Hamilton starts from pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix with championship rival Sebastian Vettel down in fourth after an action-packed qualifying session.

Two thunderstorms hit the Hungaroring that shook up qualifying, and brought the best out of Hamilton as he left it late to snatch pole away from Mercedes teammate Valttero Bottas, who starts alongside him in second. Kimi Raikkonen claimed third, having at one point looked on course for his first pole in over a year, meaning both Ferraris start behind the Mercedes’ at a track that is supposed to favour them.

Red Bull endured a nightmare day as Max Verstappen could only manage seventh, but at least he made it out of Q2 whereas teammate Daniel Ricciardo failed to do so, leaving him in a lowly 13th. Fernando Alonso starts 11th in the McLaren on what is his 37th birthday, looking to bounce back from another disappointing day.

Lap 11: Ricciardo's on the charge now, and two laps after getting past Alonso into turn one, he repeats the move on Grosjean to take 10th and move into the points.

Lap 12: Hamilton's lead over Bottas is out to 5.4s and he's looking in complete control right now. Vettel is a further 1.7s back, but you get the idea that he's waiting for Bottas to pit before going for it. Ricciardo meanwhile gets up to ninth as he slings one inside Hulkenberg at turn one again.

Lap 13: Another lap, another victim falls to Ricciardo as he repeats the move into turn one on Hartley.

Lap 14: Raikkonen pits! He's the first front-runner to blink on the ultrasofts, but he's slow into the box and there's a delay on the left rear too. that brings him out behind Magnussen in sixth, all but ending any threat of hitting Bottas with the undercut.

Jack de Menezes29 July 2018 14:34

Lap 15: Bottas reacts and pits with a neat 2.5s stop. The Mercedes emerges well ahead of Raikkonen, but will that open Bottas up to an attack from Vettel on the long-serving soft tyres. Ricciardo meanwhile makes light work of Sainz as he sweeps past for seventh, and the Australian is absolutely flying today. If only he had been starting the race towards the front.

Hamilton meanwhile puts in the fastest lap of the race so far.

The new fastest man on track - Daniel Ricciardo

Lap 18: So Hamilton's lead is now 8.6s over Vettel, with Bottas getting by Gasly to move up to third having pitted. Ricciardo meanwhile is just one second behind Magnussen and only 5.5s behind Raikkonen, and I wonder if he'll be able to take a late run at the Ferrari if his tyres hold on.

Jack de Menezes29 July 2018 14:39

Lap 21: Ricciardo is onto the gearbox of Magnussen's Haas, but when he goes for it into turn one Magnussen sees him and gives him enough space to see them through the corner safely and maintain his advantage. However, that looks to be a stay of execution, as Ricciardo is clearly the fastest man out there right now.

Jack de Menezes29 July 2018 14:41

Lap 22: Again, Magnussen holds off Ricciardo while giving him space through turn 1, but this time Ricciardo gets the run out of turn 2 and sweeps around the outside of the Haas to take sixth. Meanwhile Raikkonen gets by Gasly to move up to fourth.

Jack de Menezes29 July 2018 14:43

Lap 25: Hamilton pits! The Mercedes crew await the leader, and Vettel flashes by into the lead. It's a solid stop, 2.7s, and he emerges in second with Bottas only just coming onto the finish straight as he emerges from the pits.
