Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen tested positive for Covid-19 at the summit, days after hosting world leaders, including Joe Biden, in capital Phnom Penh.

On his Facebook page, the Cambodian leader said he had tested positive last night and that the test had been confirmed this morning.

Meanwhile, G20 is going to issue a statement at the end of the summit condemning Russia’s war in Ukraine, a senior US official said.

“I think you’re going to see most members of the G20 make clear that they condemn Russia’s war in Ukraine, that they see Russia’s war in Ukraine as the root source of immense economic and humanitarian suffering in the world,” the official was quoted as saying by AFP.

Indonesia’s president Joko Widodo said today that the world must not fall into another Cold War and that “it would be difficult for the world to move forward” unless the war ends.

Also, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky told the G20 that “now is the time when Russia’s war must and can be stopped” during his virtual address to world leaders.

“We will not allow Russia to wait out and build up its forces.”

UN chief urges G20 nations to adopt global stimulus package

UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres has urged the G20 leaders gathered in Bali to adopt a proposed stimulus package to help the developing world with investments.

“The goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees is slipping away. We are dangerously close to tipping points at which climate chaos could become irreversible,” he said.

Mr Guterres added: “G20 countries are responsible for 80 per cent of global emissions”.“I, therefore, urge G20 economies to adopt an SDG stimulus package that will provide governments of the Global South with investments and liquidity, and offer debt relief and restructuring.

“This will enable emerging economies to invest in healthcare, education, gender equality and renewable energy. To invest in their people and rescue the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

“The SDG Stimulus is a minimal and necessary step to ease the food and energy crises and prevent further suffering and hardship down the line.

“G20 countries, as the world’s most powerful economies, with a majority on the boards of Multilateral Development Banks, can and must make it happen.”

Chinese officials speak out in unprecedented criticism of Russia on eve of G20

Officials in China have expressed their displeasure at Russia’s actions in Ukraine, including Vladimir Putin’s non-disclosure of his plans to invade, and condemned the “irresponsibility” of suggested nuclear threats ahead of the G20 summit.

Mr Putin did not tell his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping “the truth”, reported the Financial Times citing a Chinese official, who said that the two leaders had hailed a “no limits” alliance between Moscow and Beijing when they met just 20 days before the Kremlin launched its invasion on Ukraine in February.

“If he had told us, we wouldn’t have been in such an awkward position,” the official said.

Mr Xi was caught off-guard by the invasion of Ukraine, which Russia still describes as a “special military operation”, according to four people briefed on the February meeting between the two leaders.

Rishi Sunak to ‘unequivocally condemn’ Russia’s war in Ukraine at G20 summit

Rishi Sunak will “unequivocally condemn” Russia’s war in Ukraine at the G20 summit but appeared to acknowledge that the group was divided on the issue of explicitly criticising the invasion.

The prime minister has arrived at his first international conference since Cop27 and vowed to discuss how to fix the global economy.

“Many countries around the world are facing similar economic challenges to us at home,” Mr Sunak said.

“Of course, I’m also going to take this opportunity to condemn Russia’s illegal, hostile activity in Ukraine.

Biden says election results say US ‘is ready to play’ after meeting with Chinese President Xi

US President Joe Biden on Monday said the Democratic Party’s strong showing in last week’s midterm elections is proof that the US is “ready to play” on the international stage rather than retreat from multilateral commitments under a GOP congress.

“The Democrats are of the view that we’re going to stay fully engaged in the world and that we in fact, know what we’re about,” said Mr Biden, who spoke to reporters following a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping ahead of the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia.

In opening remarks, Mr Biden recalled how he told allies that the US was “back” after four years of Donald Trump while on his first trip abroad in the spring of 2021.

Indonesia’s president says world must not fall into another cold war

Indonesia’s president Joko Widodo said today that the world must not fall into another cold war and that “it would be difficult for the world to move forward” unless the war ends.

He told the other world leaders present at the G20 summit that “if the war did not end, it would be difficult for the world to move forward” without referring directly to the war in Ukraine at his opening speech to the summit.

Mr Widodo made these comments during his keynote address at the B20 Summit, ahead of the G20 leaders’ summit, in Nusa Dua, Bali yesterday.
