From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Sean Harris has won Best Leading Actor at the Bafta TV Awards for his role as Stephen Morton in Channel 4's Southcliffe.

The drama, about the aftermath of a series of shootings in a small village, also starred Rory Kinnear and Shirley Henderson, both of whom were nominated ahead of tonight's ceremony.

Harris's acceptance speech won laughs from the star-studded audience at London's Theatre Royal, as he thanked his dad, his drama teacher and, importantly, his mates down the pub.

“I'll try not to mumble, I'll try and speak clearly,” Harris said, after his latest role as smuggler Joss Merlyn in Jamaica Inn was plagued by sound problems.

“I'd like to thank my agent, who's really nervous at the moment. He said 'If you win, which you won't, don't f**k it up!'”

The English actor, also known for The Borgias, went on to thank the cast of Southcliffe, with a special mention for Henderson whom he starred with on his first ever job.
