From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Crime drama Broadchurch has won the TV Bafta for Best Drama Series, beating stiff competition from The Village, Top of the Lake and My Mad Fat Diary.

The ITV show amassed a dedicated audience, with more than 8 million viewers tuning in last April to find out who killed 11-year-old Danny Latimer.

Olivia Colman played DS Ellie Miller in the hit murder mystery, with David Tennant starring opposite her as the troubled DI Alec Hardy.

Writer Chris Chibnall took to the stage to accept the Bafta from English actor Hugh Dancy.

“This is a huge team effort, thank you Bafta,” he said. “It's a big honour to be alongside those nominees.

"Thank you to the greatest cast I could ever hope for as a writer, some of whom are here today, and obviously the wonderful David Tennant who can't be. This means a lot to all of us, thank you.”

Chibnall gave a special mention to Jane Featherstone, Broadchurch's executive producer, who will be returning to work on a hotly-awaited second series later this year.

Earlier in the ceremony, David Bradley won the Bafta for Best Supporting Actor for his role as elderly sea cadet leader Jack Marshall.

Then, to score Broadchurch a hat-trick, Olivia Colman picked up the Best Actress award, beating competition from Helena Bonham-Carter's portrayal of Elizabeth Taylor.
