The Irish actor is reportedly in talks with the makers of True Detective and would be the third major Hollywood star on the show.
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson starred in the first season of the crime drama, which saw the pair play homicide detectives hunting a serial killer in Louisiana across 17 years.
It is believed that if Farrell did come on board, the show would then focus on the three leads and set in California.
The television series is notable for its use of high profile Hollywood stars playing the leads and casting Farrell would continue this trend.
However, Farrell is not the first actor to be mooted to join the show, there was speculation that Zero Dark Thirty’s Jessica Chastain and Brad Pitt, among others, could be taking on major roles on True Detective.
According to the American entertainment news site Deadline.com, Farrell is in "deep talks" over a lead role on the show.
Although he is best known for his work on big Hollywood films, Farrell got his first big break on the British television series Ballykissangel back in 1998, playing Danny Byrne.
If Farrell does seal the deal with the makers of True Detective, the role will see the actor returning to the medium that first brought him to notice.
Earlier this week True Detective received a number of Emmy Awards nominations, including one for Best Drama Series and one for both McConaughey and Harrelson.
Work has already started on the second season of True Detective, with the first two episodes of the series already written.
HBO’s head of programming, Michael Lombardo, said that the new scripts are “more exciting than the first season”.
Speaking at the audience Television Critics Association press tour on Thursday, Mr Lombardo said [Creator Nic Pizzolatto is] “an incredibly talented writer. And he’s blown us away with the first two episodes.”
Regarding casting rumours, Lombardo said that they are "in conversations” and that an announcement could be taking place in the next week.
