From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The second season of True Detective looks set to be “more exciting” than the first, HBO execs have hinted.

Speculation over the casting and plot of the next instalment has been rife, but those in the know are keeping details tightly under wraps.

Michael Lombardo, programming president, has promised “at least some” announcements over the next week but refused to confirm or deny rumours of one female and two male leads.

“It will not be long before it’s all coming out,” he said at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

“I think the people we will cast will be well known names but that wasn’t our ambition (in season one). I think you’ll be pleased with the show.”

Lombardo also praised “incredibly talented” writer Nic Pizzolatto, adding: “I think great writing attracts great actors. I think we decided early on to free ourselves of the idea of a 'star' and lean into great acting.”

The Emmy Awards nominations yesterday saw True Detective earned multiple nods. The series was shortlisted for Best Drama, with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson competing for Lead Actor.

HBO’s other hit, fantasy adaptation Game of Thrones, received 19 nominations to bring the network’s total Emmy bids to an impressive 99.

McConaughey's profile was raised dramatically during the course of True Detective's production as he picked up the Oscar for Best Actor with Dallas Buyers Club.

The 44-year-old said in March that he would not be returning to the critically-acclaimed crime series.

HBO has yet to schedule a premiere date for season two.
