From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Lauren Platt has been voted off The X Factor 2014, leaving Fleur East, Ben Haenow and Andrea Faustini in the final.

The 16-year-old from Essex sang against Andrea in the sing-off after Fleur East and Ben Haenow were saved by the public vote.

Lauren performed Faith Hill’s love ballad “There You’ll Be”, while Andrea put his own spin on Jessie J’s “Who You Are”.

Cheryl Fernandez-Versini chose to keep her act Lauren Platt, with Mel B saving Andrea, despite telling Lauren she had “peaked” tonight.

Louis Walsh chose to save Andrea and send home Lauren, leaving Simon Cowell to make the casting vote.

Simon sent Lauren home, saying he chose to save the person who "most deserved their place in the final".

More than 4 million votes were cast in this week’s elimination, the highest number so far this series.

Sunday night’s X Factor results show saw two performances from across the pond as former X Factor US winners Fifth Harmony took to the stage, as well as a special performance from Frozen singer Idina Menzel and Michael Buble.

Last year’s winner Sam Bailey also returned to the X Factor stage to perform her debut single after a year away from the limelight.
