From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have announced their engagement, the happy couple set to marry next year.

Of course, Twitter was flooded with congratulatory messages and reaction gifs, the majority of social users demanding a bank holiday (something Downing Street has said won’t happen).

One of the best reactions to the engagement news was from Patrick J Adams, who stars alongside Markle on the legal drama Suits.

"She said she was just going out to get some milk,” the actor wrote. The pair have acted alongside each other for six years, playing work colleagues who become romantically involved and eventually get engaged.

Adams continued: “Playing Meghan’s television partner for the better part of a decade uniquely qualifies me to say this: Your Royal Highness, you are a lucky man and I know your long life together will be joyful, productive and hilarious. Meghan, so happy for you, friend. Much love.”

Following the royal announcement, Markle was revealed to be leaving Suits. She has played paralegal turned lawyer Rachel Zane on the series since 2011. Adams is also reportedly leaving the series at the same time.
