From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Anger and confusion descended upon the villa thanks to the ever-entertaining headlines task during which producers aggressively stirred the pot to dish out some hard truths.
By the end of the episode, there was trouble in paradise for several couples – not ideal with just a week to go.
Below are the four biggest talking points from tonight's episode of Love Island.
1. The highs and lows of Chris and Harley
At the start of tonight's episode, Chris and Harley were living the dream life. The pair were saved from elimination and an emotional Chris could barely speak due to his happiness – one of this series' most heartwarming moments. Jump forward one hour, though, and they were against the proverbial ropes. Why? Because Chris made a big old blunder in the headlines challenge and predicted that the public thought him and India would make the perfect couple – with Harley stood directly behind him.
2. The headlines challenge
Yes, the annual headlines task was tonight and it sent tensions rippling through the villa, which was good for us because it correlates to "good television". Among the not particularly inspiring headlines were suggestions that Maura was faking interest im Curtis, that Molly-Mae was faking interest in Tommy and that India was faking interest in Ovie (notice a theme?). All of this aside, the most memorable part of the task was seeing the islanders lob drinks directly in the face of the person they thought the headline was alluding to. So needless, but so notice.
3. Ovie's rattled for the first time
The suggestion that India was faking interest in Ovie disappointed the basketball player solely because it was claimed that she was with him for his money. It turns out Ovie is a very rich man. It's clear that he got the wrong end of the stick, though: it's not Ovie's money back home she's after – it's the actual prize fund! Let's be honest, her chances of winning increase tenfold being coupled up with this year's favourite.
4. Tomorrow night's preview
You know an episode of television hasn't been that eventful when the biggest talking point is the preview for the following night's instalment, but here we are. Seemingly sensing that the public just can't get on board with Jordan and Anna, the former drops a late stage bombshell to Curtis: his head has been turned by India. Yes, the same contestant who has a huge chance of winning the show with Ovie. Just like that, Love Island has jumped the shark.
