The eighth and final season of Homeland has a new trailer.

Claire Danes will return as Carrie Mathison for one final outing alongside original star Mandy Patinkin (Saul Berenson).

The last time we saw Carrie, she was barely lucid and on the cusp of escaping captivity from the Russians – here, she’s been released and is being enlisted by Saul for another undercover mission.

Going by the trailer, it seems the situation soon turns deadly for Carrie, who can be seen held at gunpoint and rubbing shoulders with assassin Yevgeny Gromov (Costa Ronin).

“Whatever she’s in is because of me,” Saul can be heard saying at one stage. “I am not turning my back on her.”

Meanwhile, Carrie is put in a position where she might have to turn back on her trusted adviser.

“I can’t betray Saul,” she tells Yevgeny, who responds: “From what I’ve seen, you can do just about anything.”

Danes has played Mathison since the show’s critically-acclaimed debut, which starred Damien Lewis as Nicholas Brody.

For its seven seasons to date, Homeland has won five Golden Globes and eight Emmy Awards, including two trophies for Danes.

The series was last on the air in April 2018.

Speaking at the Television Critics Association (TCA), Danes said the final season marks a “perfect symmetry” for the show, which sees Carrie in a similar position to Brody's in the first season.

“The really big idea of the season is that Carrie Mathison steps into Nicholas Brody’s shoes," she say.s

Homeland returns in the US on 9 February – it’s UK release date is expected to arrive on Channel 4 soon after.
