From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Claire Danes will make her last stand as Carrie Mathison in Homeland season 8 which has been confirmed to be the Showtime drama's last.

The US show, which began in 2011, will return for one final season in June 2019. Network president and CEO David Nevins confirmed the news at the Television Critics Associaton summer press tour, adding: “I do not want to hear the word 'cancellation. [Co-creator and showrunner] Alex Gansa will bring the show to its proper conclusion.”

Gansa had previously told The Hollywood Reporter that the eighth season of the series, which also stars Mandy Patinkin and F. Murray Abraham, would be his last with Danes following suit months later.

The actor has played Mathison since its critically-acclaimed debut which starred Damien Lewis as Nicholas Brody. For its seven seasons to date, Homeland has won five Golden Globes and eight Emmy Awards including two trophies for Danes.

Following the departure of Lewis, the show received a huge shake-up presenting a new story in a brand new location each season, including Islamabad and Berlin. For its past few runs, Homeland has been based on US soil in the midst of the election of President Elizabeth Keane (Elizabeth Marvel).

Homeland has also starred Morena Baccarin, Rupert Friend, Tracy Letts and Miranda Otto.
