From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Miley Cyrus knew she “really made it” when she learned that Cher “f***ing hated her”.

While appearing on Billy Idol’s forthcoming SiriusXM radio special, Cyrus recalled seeing the bright side after being publicly called out by Cher seven years ago.

Shortly after Cyrus’s performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, in which she infamously cavorted with an enormous foam finger, Cher voiced her dissatisfaction with the display in an interview.

“I’m not old-fashioned,” Cher said at the time. “She could have come out naked, and if she’d just rocked the house, I would have said, ‘You go, girl.’ It just wasn’t done well. She can’t dance, her body looked like hell, the song wasn’t great, one cheek was hanging out. And, chick, don’t stick out your tongue if it’s coated.”

Cyrus told Idol that she loved that Cher “talked s***” about her.

“I had Cher come after me,” Cyrus explained. “That’s when I thought I had really made it. I’m like, ‘Oh, Cher gives a f*** about what I’m doing!’ She was mad that I was sticking my tongue out all the time, and all that s***.”

She continued: “And I’m like, ‘Yo, I pissed Cher off, I really made it!’ That’s what I mean. When these legends, and these icons, and these artists that we look up to… when they, you know, f***ing hate us, it’s still a compliment.”

Earlier this month, Cyrus said that she has “trauma” from being criticised by the media at an early age, for what she “felt was pretty average teenage, early [twenties] exploration”.

Cyrus collaborates with Idol on a track from her new album, Plastic Hearts, which The Independent called “a truckload of fun”.
