It may be the most ‘serious’ awards ceremony in Hollywood, but it’s rare for anything Oscars-related to occur without some amusing mishap or other.
On nominations announcement day, it was Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs who became the laughing stock of Twitter, after she mispronounced Mr Turner cinematographer Dick Pope’s name.
That’s right, Mr Pope became, err, Mr Poop. Talk about awkward. Of course, social media instantly picked up on Isaacs’ unfortunate error…
Isaacs is far from the only announcer to slip up while reading the shortlist, with John Travolta calling Frozen star Idina Menzel, Adele Dazeem, just last year.
British cinematographer Pope has been nominated for an Oscar before, for The Illusionist in 2007. This year, he will go up against Robert Yeoman for The Grand Budapest Hotel, Roger Deakins for Unbroken, Lukasz Zal and Ryszard Lenczewski for Ida and Emmanuel Lubezki for Birdman.
Mike Leigh’s Mr Turner, starring Timothy Spall as the English painter, was also nominated for best original score.
The Oscars take place in Hollywood on Sunday 22 February, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris.
