From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Sony has unleashed a new trailer for Venom - with an even closer look at Marvel's sinister new offering.

While an initial teaser kept things distinctly teased by withholding our first look at the alien symbiote that latches on to poor Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), this time the beast is definitely out - in all its toothy, slobbering glory.

As part of Sony's attempt to launch a Spider-Manless Spiderverse (he's still bound to the MCU and so can't appear in any Sony-only films), we see Venom as the product of Dr. Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed)'s experimentation with an alien symbiote.

When Eddie, a reporter, attempts to investigate what he suspects are experiments fatal to their test subjects, he himself comes into contact with the symbiote, and it starts to take over.

We also get a glimpse of Michelle Williams, though Woody Harrelson seems noticeably absent. Could that add fuel to the rumours he's playing Carnage? There's also a quick glimpse at the film's main villain Riot, a symbiote that can jump from person to person; a clip of a face-off with Venom sees its Carlton Drake hiding within.

Venom — the first movie in Sony’s Spiderverse —is supposed to be followed by Silver & Black, which centres on the superheroes Black Cat and Silver Sable and will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, though the film has been pulled from its initial release date.

Directed by Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer, the movie reaches cinemas 5 October 2018.
