The nominations were announced today (24 January), as awards season continues.

Among the surprise nominees this year is Paul Mescal who received a Best Actor nod for his role in the father-daughter drama Aftersun. He is nominated alongside Austin Butler, Brendan Fraser, Bill Nighy, and fellow Irish actor Colin Farrell.
It is a big year for Ireland, with Brendan Gleeson and Kerry Condon joining Mescal and Farrell in the list of nominees. The Banshees of Inisherin, An Irish Goodbye and A Quiet Girl all received nods this year.

Another shock came when Ana de Armas was nominated for Best Actress thanks to her role in the hugely polarising Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde, which The Independent gave one-star.
Riz Ahmed and Alison Williams hosted the announcement presentation from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Beverly Hills, California.
The 95th Academy Awards will air live on ABC on Sunday (12 March) with Jimmy Kimmel returning as host for the third time.

Oscar winner Riz Ahmed and Get Out star Alison Williams – most recently seen in the horror hit M3GAN – will be announcing today’s nominees.
When will the Oscars nominations be broadcast?
The announcements – livestreamed from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles – will begin at 1.30pm GMT / 8.30am ET / 5.30am PT.

Today’s nominees won’t come as a total surprise. In December last year, a shortlist for the 95th Academy Awards was unveiled in 10 categories.
These categories include Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound, and Visual Effects.

Shortlist for Best International Feature Film
With an increasing number of people watching international films, more eyes than ever will be on the International Feature Film category.
This is the shortlist for International Feature Film:

Is this the year sequels dominate?
2023 could be the year that sequels dominate, with more follow-up films than ever before in contention for top prizes.
The contendors include Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
It’s also not impossible that Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery could also nab a nod.
Only eight sequels have been nominated for Best Picture before, including Toy Story 3 and Mad Max: Fury Road. Never before, however, has there been two in a single year.
Ana de Armas could be one of the biggest surprises
The Best Actress category is as crowded as ever.
It is probably safe to say that Cate Blanchett (Tár), Viola Davis (The Woman King), Danielle Deadwyler (Till), and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once) will receive nominations this afternoon.
More surprising would be a nod for Ana de Armas for her controversial role as Marilyn Monroe in Blonde. Despite the film receiving mostly awful reviews, de Armas has managed to secure nominations at the Globes, SAG, and BAFTA awards.
I would speculate that that last nomination is between de Armas and Michelle Williams for her part in The Fablemans.
