From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The most-searched for movies of the year have been revealed, telling the story of 2019 in film.

Among the most Googled films are Marvel blockbusters, Oscar winners and headline-making releases, including Joker.

Joker's placement of second on the list is no doubt earned thanks to the debate surrounding its violence and whether it was suitable for 15-year-olds.

The film, which follows a man named Arthur Fleck's disturbing evolution into the Batman villain, is the sixth highest-grossing film of the year and earned four Golden Globe nominations.

Superhero blockbusters Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel and Aquaman – released in December 2018 – also appear on the list, as does Disney's live-action version of The Lion King.

Avengers villain Thanos ranks as the fifth most searched for term in the UK.

Today, Google announces the results of its 2019 Year in Search, revealing the people, topics, events, and places that captured the world’s attention through the lens of Google Search.

In terms of Oscar films, Green Book – which beat Roma to Best Picture at the Academy Awards earlier this year – and Bohemian Rhapsody, which scored Rami Malek a Best Actor trophy, feature in the top 10.

Surprise omissions from the ranking include Elton John biopic Rocketman, Pixar sequel Toy Story 4 and Disney's live-action version of Aladdin.

Film releases expected to be on the list next year include new Bond film No Time to Die, Marvel's Black Widow and Top Gun: Maverick.
