Following initial rumours of an appearance in Phase Four of the MCU, Nova is said to be receiving a standalone film during Phase Five, which would begin in 2022.
The report comes from MCU Cosmic, who states that “reliable sources” believe the character – whose real name is Richard Rider – could appear on the big screen in the same year as Black Panther 2.
For those who don’t know, Rider inherits the full power of the Nova Corps after his home of Xandar is destroyed.
Now, fans actually heard about this event in Avengers: Infinity War, when Thor mentioned that Thanos acquired the Power Stone after “destroying Xandar”.
This means that a Nova origins film could see Josh Brolin reprise the role of Thanos for a scene set ahead of the events of Infinity War.
Should Nova fail to receive his own film, it’s likely the character – a key character in the cosmic MCU – could appear as a supporting player in either Captain Marvel 2 or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.
In 2017, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told ComicBook.com that there is “more immediate potential” to introduce Nova to the MCU than most other characters, noting he was in the original draft of the very first Guardians of the Galaxy film.
It’s believed that the report on Nova came as a result of a creative retreat in San Francisco attended by numerous members of the Marvel Studios development team.
Other new films scheduled to be released as part of the MCU over the coming years include The Eternals, starring Angelina Jolie and Richard Madden, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
