Sophie Turner, best known for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, has been cast as Mary Shelley in a new film about her life.

The biopic , entitled Mary Shelley’s Monster, will be one of the first Hollywood films to focus solely on the author.

Featuring a ‘monster’ which will represent Shelley’s fictional alter ego, the film will follow the teenage heroine through her early adult years.

Portraying Shelley with an alter ego will not be the only twist, however.

Producer Rose Ganguzza explained: “Our film is not a period drama. It is a story of youth that transcends time, a gothic romance, a love triangle that involves a dark passenger and we are tremendously excited to have such an exciting cast onboard this wonderful project.”

Other cast members include Jeremy Irvine, who will play Percy Shelley, and Taissa Farmiga who will star as Mary’s stepsister Claire Claremont.

Defying her parents at the mere age of 16, Mary Shelley ran away with the married Percy Shelley. The pair eloped two years later after his wife committed suicide.

The author was only 19 when bad weather in Geneva inspired her to write Frankenstein. The novel, which was first published anonymously in 1818, received a scandalous reception. In its later publications Shelley revised her work under pressure to make it more conservative, also adding a longer preface by herself.

The film is the second to be announced this year looking at the controversial author. A Storm in the Stars will star Elle Fanning and focus on the love affair between Percy Shelley and Mary.
