While Avengers: Infinity War promises to feature more superheroes on screen in one film than ever before, one character will most certainly be absent from the action.

It's been suspected for some time that the film's climactic battle - teased in the trailer - is the one that Anthony Mackie previously stated would feature more than 40 Marvel characters leaving fans to assume this meant superheroes old and new. However, one character who won't be getting a surprise introduction within the forthcoming film's running time is Carol Danvers AKA Captain Marvel.

The news was confirmed by ComicBook.com journalist Brandon Davis who was fortunate enough to visit the film's set.

This may come as a surprise to some considering Infinity War is being pitched as the end of a particular phase for the Marvel Cinematic Universe - the official passing of the torch from the original Avengers to a new generation, including Black Panther and Spider-Man.

It seems the film may not have a whole lot of time to introduce new characters considering Infinity War - as confirmed by screenwriter Stephen McFeely - will see certain characters depart the franchise. “It's safe to say we will say farewell to people,” he recently told Entertainment Weekly.

All this isn't to say Larson's character won't be glimpsed in one of the film's two (if not more) inevitable end credits sequences which will most likely be deployed to set up the first film on Marvel's release slate following the superhero smorgasbord: Ant-Man and the Wasp, starring Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Davis also confirmed that Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) won't be a part of the climactic battle which is expected to take place in Wakanda.

Captain Marvel - the first female-led Marvel Cinematic Universe film - will be directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind). Larson will be joined for the adventure by Ben Mendelsohn, Jude Law, Humans star Gemma Chan and Samuel L. Jackson.

In the meantime, fans can get excited for seeing the likes of Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) on-screen alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy - led by Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana - for the very first time.

The remainder of Infinity War's confirmed ensemble includes Rudd, Renner, Josh Brolin, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hiddleston, Tom Holland, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan...

...Don Cheadle, Pom Klementieff, Benedict Cumberbatch, Letitia Wright, Bradley Cooper, Benedict Wong, Sean Gunn and King T'Challa himself, Chadwick Boseman.

Avengers: Infinity War hits UK cinemas 26 April.
