From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Anne Hathaway has said that the online backlash to her winning the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Les Misérables was “empowering”.

The star also won Best Supporting Actress prizes at the Baftas, SAG Awards and Golden Globes in 2013 for her performance as Fantine.

Her awards season success was followed by a lot of online abuse, and in a 2014 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Hathaway revealed she googled herself after the Oscars and discovered an article titled: “Why does everyone hate Anne Hathaway?”

Bloggers have called her an “annoying theatre kid” while others criticised her for being disingenuous.

Now, eight years later, Hathaway told The Sun: “I really don’t want to dredge up the past but I did have my monster out there, I did have the internet turn on me and hate me and it was like a whole big thing. And it was a really good thing for me personally.”

She continued: “You can be incredibly empowered because of those things. So I guess what I’d say is when the bad s*** happens, don’t fear it – just go with it, flow with it.”

Hathaway has forthcoming roles in the Warner Bros Sesame Street movie and the Eighties Robert De Niro drama Armageddon Time.
