A new children’s book will tell the story of Dr Anthony Fauci, the infectious diseases expert who has led America’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Dr. Fauci: How a Boy from Brooklyn Became America's Doctor will be released on 29 June in the US by Simon & Schuster. It was written by author Kate Messner and illustrated by Alexandra Bye.

The picture book biography documents Dr Fauci’s life from his childhood in Brooklyn, New York, to the present.

Born on 24 December 1940, Dr Fauci has been the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984. He has served as an advisor to every US president since Ronald Reagan, as outlined in a New York Times report in March 2020.

While Dr Fauci’s career has spanned decades, his name became known across America at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. He has been the foremost expert on Covid-19, and is now a chief medical advisor to President Joe Biden.

Simon & Schuster describes the book as an “engaging narrative” that “draws from interviews the author did with D. Fauci himself”.

“[It] follows Anthony from his Brooklyn beginnings through medical school and his challenging role working with seven US presidents to tackle some of the biggest public health challenges of the past fifty years, including the Covid-19 pandemic,” the publisher’s description adds.

“Extensive back matter rounds out Dr Fauci’s story with a timeline, recommended reading, a full spread of facts about vaccines and how they work, and Dr Fauci’s own tips for future scientists.”
