A yellow warning for snow and ice is in place over parts of western Scotland, with forecasters warning of travel disruption as sub-zero temperatures grip the country.

The Met Office warned icy conditions could cause injuries from slips and falls, and cautioned people to be wary of treacherous patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

Several flood warnings are in place in the north of England, including in Keswick in the Lake District and the River Ouse at York.

There are also 30 flood alerts are scattered throughout the north, east and central parts of England as bands of rain are expected to move eastwards throughout Friday morning.

According to the Met Office, some showers will be heavy with hail and scattered showers are expected mainly in the north and west of the country. Snow also fell snow over northern hills on Friday.

Forecasters said there would be some sunny spells at times during the day in the east, but more persistent rain was expected to push in from the west, spreading further east later.

Friday will have less windy conditions compared to Thursday, but there is a risk of gales in the south as the day wears on. Temperatures in the south of England are expected to reach highs of 10 or 11C, although it will still feel cold in windy conditions.

In Scotland, temperatures could reach highs of 7C, so rather cold with outbreaks of rain and a chance of hail. Tonight will see rain and hill snow at times, turning drier later.

The wet and windy conditions are expected to last into the weekend, turning wintry over some hills. However, drier weather with sunny spells and milder temperatures are expected as we move into the week ahead.
