The worst of the rain is expected on Wednesday in parts of northwest England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, according to the Met Office.
"We have a yellow warning out for Dumfries and Galloway from midday today until midnight tonight," Craig Snell, a spokesperson for the weather service, told The Independent.
"There is scope that we may have to extend that southward into parts of Cumbria and Lancashire as well,"
Mr Snell warned there was a risk of "some localised flooding" in a few badly-hit spots on Wednesday.
He said the weather should be wet in western parts of the UK, while remaining "largely dry" in eastern areas.
"Most of us will see further rain as we go through the week, but it shouldn’t be anywhere near as disruptive as potentially the rain across the parts of Scotland and England today," Mr Snell said.
The yellow warning for rain indicates the wet weather could cause disruption to travel in the highlighted part of southwest Scotland, which could see flooding on roads, and possibly the flooding of "a few homes and businesses".
As the week goes on, "most of us will see further rain", the Met Office said.
Brighter weather is forecast on Thursday, along with a few showers. Northern parts of the UK are also expected to be windy.
The Met Office has forecast sunshine mixed with showers in the north on Friday, while southern areas have been told to expect clouds with some rain.
"The sunshine showers continue in the north on Saturday but in the south we should have a dry day," Mr Snell said. "And then Sunday looks like scattered showers almost anywhere across the UK."
