The Conservatives have gone cuckoo – it’s time for them to fly the nest

Kwasi Kwarteng has been levered from the nest by his party siblings. Others are more than likely to follow, including the prime minister.

It must now be evident to the majority of the public that the parliamentary Tory party is – now more than ever before – the tool of the ultra-rich. It would appear that the right-wing think tanks these people fund in promotion of their interests can fairly claim the ownership of government policies. The majority of the press have, in recent times, exerted their influence on the public to serve the same purpose.

Far from leading, Liz Truss follows. To the clear detriment of what most people would regard as the national interest, the wishes of this small and ultra-wealthy constituency guide her policies. The victims of Conservative cuckoo politics are the majority of the country; the facilitators who admit them into the nest are the duped Tory party members and voters.

It is time for this Tory-controlled parliament to find its collective conscience, serve the public interest, and grant a long-suffering population the relief of a general election.

It may be an unlikely outcome, but it’s probably the only way to avoid yet more of the same. On this, and on future occasions, the choice of prime minister should be made by the country.

I am a mother living in rented accommodation which costs me £1,350 per month. I have had to flee domestic violence twice. I have asked the local councils for free school meals as my children are going to school and college hungry.

In all the many years I could have asked for help, I never have, and nothing has been granted (other than the univeral credit I receive because I am self-employed). I need help, but I’m just not getting it. It’s awful.

Why do they make everything so awkward and unobtainable? I’ve tried everything.

Suella Braverman, the home secretary, has said that she doesn’t want protesters holding the country to ransom. She obviously regards that as the prerogative of the government.

There appears to be a convenient type of memory lapse happening at the moment: everyone seems to think Jeremy Hunt, the new chancellor, is going to be the answer to all the country’s problems, but was this not the same Jeremy Hunt who didn’t make recommended provisions for a pandemic, and left this country without necessary equipment when it desperately needed it?

As a retired health worker, my main memory of his time as health secretary was his effort to privatise the NHS by the back door by giving contracts to US companies. He is not someone I trust to do the right thing by the poorest in our society.

The jury is out on the whole Tory government; a general election is what we need right now.
