If it’s the economy that decides elections – Boris Johnson could be in trouble

It’s the economy,” we are told, when assessing the key factor that voters take into consideration at an election.
So it looks as though 2022 might be a bit dodgy for the Tories with dire predictions on all sides about inflation, rising prices etc.
Add in the increasing anti-Boris Johnson sentiment in the country and things could be decisively shifting towards the progressive parties – provided they play their cards right (and avoid attacking each other).

No sympathy
Interesting article from Ben Chapman. Personally I’ve little sympathy with the pubs and restaurants that failed to plan for the “new normal” during the past year.
In too many cases large sectors of the hospitality world cried for support and lobbied the government NOT to restrict activity.
Having achieved the levels of freedom they requested, hospitality has to demonstrate and explain an appropriate level of care and planning to attract customers to visit their businesses, not chase further public funds to compensate for not doing so. Personally I continue to visit restaurants and bars I’m confident in – but it’s a relatively short list.
With freedom comes responsibility in this case!

Science terms
In the otherwise excellent article on the benefits of science, Steven Cutts should have known better than to say “the James Webb telescope … ought to represent a quantum leap … from the Hubble Space Telescope”. A quantum leap is the smallest possible change in an electron’s energy level, not a large one, a widespread misunderstanding.

Musical notes
With reference to the article about music in airports and on planes, could I add that this music is a pain for people who wear hearing aids.
I have found cabin crew most helpful when I have asked that the music be turned down or even turned off. Other passengers have also been supportive.

Vinyl highlights
If Katie Edwards feels vinyl collectors are “snobby” about their collections, then what would she make of the person I met who had a gold stylus on his turntable for a better quality sound – and there are some who have a diamond stylus.
Is music appreciation not about the quality of the sound – not the transmitting device and LP record?
