I have voted Conservative all my life – no longer

I cannot believe the lies that this prime minister is prepared to peddle just to save his own skin. I have voted Conservative all my life but I will not in all conscience be able to vote for them again. Well done Ian Blackford for standing up and saying it how it is.

Ian Blackford: hero or villain?
One of the problems with Ian Blackford and others is their blinkered view of the world of Westminster. It is far too easy to call the prime minister a liar and shout that he is under investigation by the police – but what has Ian Blackford done and said in recent days about the blind eye the government is turning to the huge rising cost of energy, particularly when much of Scotland’s housing stock is very poor in terms of energy efficiency?
And while recovery from the pandemic has to be paid for, what has Ian Blackford and others who are vocal in their criticism of the PM, done and said about easing the financial burden on families?

In our House of Commons, an MP may tell as big a lie as they choose (until they get found out; if they get found out) but if another MP calls them a liar, they are dismissed from the chamber. At the next general election my vote will go to the party that promises a review to bring parliament into the real world.

Is a democracy truly a democracy when an MP cannot call a lying prime minister a liar without being censured?

I’m thinking of moving to Ian Blackford’s constituency so he can be my MP. Bravo!

No 10 parties
Is it not astonishing that our prime minister had to rely on Sue Gray, a civil servant, to tell him that “the excessive consumption of alcohol is not appropriate in a professional workplace”? Or that some events held at a time when the entire country was under the most stringent Covid restrictions (imposed by the prime minister himself) “should not have been allowed to take place”?
In all of my working life I have never worked for a company where the consumption of alcohol at work would be tolerated. Neither can I imagine any circumstances under which I would have held a party in my employer’s offices and garden, during their absence and without their consent (as happened the night before Prince Philip’s funeral) and not expect to be fired. Clearly those organising and attending these events felt confident that their employer would not mind, or perhaps had even given his permission?
Our leader has become an object of ridicule and can no longer represent Britain on the world stage. It is time for him to go.

Put pen to paper
A number of so-called senior Tories, including Theresa May and Andrew Mitchell, seem happy to sit on the sidelines expressing concerns over Boris Johnson’s premiership. They don’t, however, seem prepared to “put their money where their mouths are” and write to Sir Graham Brady.

Met Police needs an overhaul
The latest exposure of racism and misogyny within the Metropolitan Police affects every force up and down the land. It is endemic and until a root-and-branch overhaul is undertaken, these disgusting events will just continue. These recent revelations are not aberrations – they are indicators of the real police mindset. The barrel is full of rotten apples. Cressida Dick is a product of “modern policing” – both she and it must go.

What Brexit benefits?
Ben Chapman’s article about “Brexit Benefits” (‘The government’s “benefits of Brexit” should alarm us all – no wonder businesses are annoyed’, 1 February) points out that the government wants businesses to be free to produce in accordance with new “UK” standards so that we are free to do as we want. But many of these freedoms are an illusion, as exports have to comply with the standards of the country or counties that you are exporting to. If you do not comply, you cannot export. So we have to comply with EU requirements and likewise if we export to the US. I exported to both in the past and you have to comply. It’s common sense but we seem short of that in the government at present.
