Sir: 1996 sees the 25th anniversary of my starting to campaign for clear, understandable English. It is a campaign that is still far from over, although we have made many advances.
To celebrate this silver jubilee, I am placing a time capsule in the vaults of our office, recording some of the highlights of the past 25 years. Items going in the capsule need to reflect the years, and most should have relevance to the campaign.
I shall be putting in newspapers from 1 January 1971, the year my campaigning started, as well as from 1 January 1996. We will also include documents to show how far the fight against gobbledegook has come. And, of course, there will be books and articles using the best clear English.
Your readers may like to make their own suggestions of what will give a feel of our past 25 years for future generations.
