Letter: Untruths behind clamour for a graduate tax

Sir: I note that in your advocacy of a tax on graduates, you make no distinction between those who live on a grant for three or four years, and those who, unaided by grants, gain graduate status by part-time work. Many of them pay for their courses.

Surely, those who study part-time, either in the many universities that now offer part-time courses or in the Open University, or indeed take external degrees without any tuition, as I did 40 years ago, should not be taxed as if they owed anything at all to the state.
