Letter: Unprepared for royal relationships
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Sir: A major player, yet to be fully scrutinised for its role in the demise of royal marriages, is the British preparatory school.
Anyone who was sent to a prep school at an early age will identify easily with the difficulties the 'young royals' face in their personal lives. When you learn that love is something you must do without, that close attachments to other human beings is a sign of weakness, that expressions of emotion are deeply shameful, how will you ever manage the openness, honesty and compromise that a close relationship demands. To survive the unloving environment of boarding school, we built thick walls around ourselves and kept love alive by fantasising about the kind of relationships that in real life can't exist.
The reason why former prep- school boarders are forever divorcing is that during some of the most formative years of their lives, the quality of love and relationships was characterised by distance - not closeness.
Yours faithfully,
