I AM A Liverpudlian on holiday, and can assure you that far from anti-black agitation in the city, if a white woman with a known criminal record half as sensational as Petrona Lashley's had been suggested for Lord Mayor, it would have been a non-starter ('A colour the city can't forgive', 14 August).

Liverpudlians are not racists but we do have to live down a television-promoted image that we are drossy drop-outs or druggy drifters.

What we need is not 'political correctness' but incorruptible politicians who can be found in all 'sections' of the 'community' if we looked for them.
