Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

From Cllr Pola Manzila Uddin

Sir: Now that John Major has confirmed his position as leader of the Conservative Party, he will hope to bind up the wounds of his party and lead it as a united body. Is it too much to hope that he will try to perform the same service for the nation of which he is Prime Minister?

Viewed from a Tower Hamlets' perspective, there is much to bind. Everywhere we see division. Many are homeless. Very many more live in rotting council accommodation which we lack the funds to repair and which we are not allowed to replace by new buildings.

Schools have developed a new hierarchy, with the schools attended by ministers' children at the top of the heap. Race relations are a sensitive subject handled insensitively by ministers and officials, in danger (literally) of bursting into flames.

A leader of a united party should aspire to lead one nation. Will the Prime Minister agree that this means public expenditure, or will he give priority to income tax cuts to target groups?

Yours faithfully,

Pola Manzila Uddin

Deputy Leader

Tower Hamlets Council

London, E14
