Sir: Having just witnessed, with the rest of the world, the farce of the 1993 Grand National, does it not perfectly sum up the state of our nation?

The ruling classes (the Jockey Club) presiding over the corrupt inefficient system (steeplechasing), and laying the blame on the working classes (the false-start flagman) to the detriment of the people (the punters).

Yours sincerely,

AL MALTBY
