Letter: South Elmsall might be down, but it's not out
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.South Elmsall does have problems relating to the closure of Frickley Colliery, and it needs all the help it can get ("To buck or not to buck the coal market", 30 November). Incorrect information only causes us difficulties in bringing more jobs into the area. The 500 figure you mention as registered heroin addicts in fact refers to people who have used heroin. The number of regular users is 100. The area these figures relate to includes the two adjacent communities, giving a total population of around 25,000.
The picture is not only grim. On the day the taskforce visited, the area celebrated the switching on of its Christmas lights with a special market, a parade of local Guides and Badgers of the St John's Ambulance Brigade, a display of Irish dancing and a firework display. Please tell the world that South Elmsall is fighting back.
