Sir: As opinion polls here continue to show a clear majority in favour of monarchy, such a referendum as Neal Champion wishes (Letter, 29 January) would be an appalling waste of public money (though not so expensive and disruptive as holding regular republican presidential elections). Incidentally, what would be the cost of providing security for presidents (both active and retired)?
