Sir: The Railtrack source quoted on your front-page today is quite right to say that working a signal box is not like 'piloting the starship Enterprise'.

The Enterprise is a fictional vessel staffed by occasionally wooden actors, whereas the operator of a signal box is responsible for the lives of hundreds of real people.
