Sir: Your editorial (9 March) is so right about the need to reinspire society. Augustine of Hippo was one who, as much as any in history, reinspired the society of his time. He began with the recognition of his own sinfulness and of his need for God's Love: "Such was my heart, O God, such was my heart. I had no motive for my wickedness except wickedness itself. It was foul, and I loved it. I loved the self-destruction" (Confessions; Bk 2).

Buggery or sodomy, fornication, adultery, are all sins. Any attempt to turn these into virtues or to suggest that they are channels of the Holy Spirit (Love), is the ultimate evil, the ultimate deception. The Catholic Church could never base any reconstruction or reinspiration on such evil. Augustine knew that as far back as the 4th century.
