Letter: Reasons for the short supply of science students

Sir: We read that despite good national results at A-level there is a continuing decline in those opting for science subjects. Scientists' real love is working out how things work. Those schoolchildren who have the potential to be scientists can readily work out a simple fact about how our society works: scientists are poorly paid. Why then study science?
