Sir: I read with interest today (10 October) your front page report of John Major's speech to the Tory party conference.

Having done so, I wondered what his view would be of anyone who said to him: 'At the heart of my policy lies one objective and one only - a cold, clear-eyed calculation of my own self-interest.'
